The Flow of Sustainability

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

April 18, 2010 – Music and Message by Ishak Kang

As a preface to Earth Day, I wanted to delve into the concepts of sustainability illustrated by the works of both Emanuel Swedenborg and William Blake.  Although Swedenborg’s writings had quite an influence on the younger Blake, he eventually rejects much of Swedenborg’s moral doctrine.  However, the following quotations reveal their shared view on the holographic nature of reality.

“Imagination is the real and eternal world of which this vegetable universe is but a faint shadow.”

-Jerusalem, published in 1804, William Blake

“The visible universe is nothing else than a theater, representative of the Lord’s kingdom.”

-Arcana Coelestia, 3483, published 1749-1756, Emanuel Swedenborg

What is this “Vegetable Universe” Blake is referring to?  And, does it matter if its not real?  What are our responsibilities to shepherd this world?  Is our physical environment a mere representation of celestial patterns and truth?  Buckminster Fuller defined these ephemeral truths as “pattern integrity” in his lengthy tome, Synergetics.  His most basic example of this was his deconstruction of a simple overhand loop knot in a piece of rope.  He explained that it was the ephemeral pattern that had “tensegrity” not the material.  It did not matter if he used a hemp rope or even a piece of cooked spaghetti.  It is the pattern that matters.

The opening stanza of William Blake’s Augeries of Innocence is one of his most famous…

To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour.

As the congregation joined me in a song repeating this verse, I remarked on the final scene of the movie, “Men in Black.”

Click here for the scene from Men in Black (dubbed in French!)

Of course, there are more direct pop culture references to William Blake.  Here is the scene from Bull Durham.

The value of poetry and art is that because of pattern integrity, they offer us more accessibility to complex concepts. Thanks to these movies and the popularity of Aldous Huxley and Jim Morrison, I have heard of William Blake long before I learned of Emanuel Swedenborg.  I appreciate the value of learning more about the true flow of sustainability.

I close this blog post with a description of flow by Mihaly Csikzentmihaliyi

Flow is completely focused motivation. It is a single-minded immersion and represents perhaps the ultimate in harnessing the emotions in the service of performing and learning. In flow the emotions are not just contained and channeled, but positive, energized, and aligned with the task at hand. To be caught in the ennui of depression or the agitation of anxiety is to be barred from flow. The hallmark of flow is a feeling of spontaneous joy, even rapture, while performing a task.

Happy New Year!!  2010 is off to a great start with an awesome sermon by Jim Lawrence today, which is posted on the Sermons page (“To Have Successful Failures (Among Other New Year’s Resolutions)”.  I left the recorder on for the offertory as well, so you can hear the musical interlude following the sermon (“How Can I Keep From Singing”, arranged by Lorie Line).  Members of the congregation will be preaching the next two Sundays.  Annamarie Torpey will talk on January 10, about “Thy Will Be Done.”  On January 17, Amy Bingham Kang will present her sermon titled “Heaven and Hell — Richmond Style.”  Please do join us!

Sunday, December 13 – Third Sunday of Advent – Joy

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Ha!  Another “on” week for the recorder — Rodrigo’s sermon “Welcoming God’s Joy. . .In God’s Time” is posted on the Sermons page.  Rev. Lana Sandahl will be preaching next Sunday with the Fourth Sunday of Advent theme: Peace.  If all goes well, not only will the recorder work, but she will be able to use the new wireless microphone!

Reminder:  Christmas Eve, 5:00, Lessons and Carols (the Christmas story in narration and song), followed by a potluck feast.  I “hope” you can come because I would “love” to see you and it will be a “joy”full evening — as the culmination of Advent, we will light the Christ candle on the wreath.

Sunday, December 6 – Second Sunday of Advent – Love

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Well, the recorder seems to be an every other week thing, and this was an “off” week.  However, Kim Hinrichs sent me the word document of her sermon (“Preparing A Way”) and that is posted on the Sermons page, along with the reading.  Rodrigo Marcus will be preaching on the 13th, about the third Sunday of Advent theme — Joy.

Christmas will be here soon!  Our Christmas Eve celebration will be Lessons and Carols at 5:00, followed by a potluck feast.  All are welcome to join us for either or both events.

Sunday, November 29 — First Sunday of Advent – Hope

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Woo hoo!  The recorder worked, and Jim Lawrence’s sermon is posted on the “Sermons” page.  Hopefully we’ve gotten all the kinks worked out and the sermons will be available every week.  This Sunday was Hope.  Kim Hinrichs will be preaching on December 6, the second Sunday of Advent, about Love.

Boo hoo!  The recorder didn’t work again, so we do not have Sunday’s sermon available, which is a shame, because it was excellent.  Our Annual Meeting was a great success.  Reports from the President and the Sunday School both painted an optimistic picture for the year ahead.  We have three new Board members — Amy Kang, Jim Lawrence and Moose.  Thank you, thank you to outgoing members Sandy Westlie and Roland Warthan for your hard work over the past years!  Our Harvest Feast was the best part of the day.  Good food and wonderful fellowship.  Thank you, Terry Lee, for everything you did in the kitchen!
